Character Information

Cosette Lantoceins
Adventurer and Goldsmith
Home in Gridania, Eorza

Cosette was born to parents that could not care for her. So, instead of giving her to a family that could, or asking for help, they threw her away. Literally. Her biological mother took her to a rubbish repository and carefully set her inside, swaddled up in a rag. It was not the only kindness she could give, but the only one she did.

It was a miracle that anyone found her. Homme Lantoceins happened to be taking his trash out to the same repository, only to hear the faintest of cries, as of a newborn child. He was going to dismiss the noise as a nearby house with a child… but he thought better of it. There were no houses near the repository, and he could see nobody else nearby that might be carrying the child making the noise.

He almost didn't look. Who would think to find a baby within the garbage? But, he would never forgive himself if he didn't look and found out later that he could have saved a child. He nearly broke down into tears when he stepped up onto the bin next to the repository and saw the small bundled child crying within. She was a precious little dunesfolk Lalafellian and, now that he discovered her, he couldn't leave her there. Homme and Marie, his wife, just had a child of their own, so they started to bring her back to health, bathed her, cleaned her, fed her, clothed her… they started to take care of her as if she was their own.

They couldn't imagine anyone wanting to throw a child away, or even it accidentally happening, but when they went to social services, no child had been reported missing and nobody was registered as having a child recently. They could only guess that the child was not born within a medical treatment facility and the family had never registered them. The social worker said that it was not uncommon for them to find children at their door, but not usually in the trash.

The social worker then gave them the option to turn the child over and have them put into an orphanage until either the parents could be located or they are adopted, or care for the child themselves. Marie and Homme didn't need much time to decide. They adopted her right then. Marie was already nursing her young one, named Deon at that point, so she just fed Cosette on the other side as if Cosette was a twin. They guessed that Cosette was about three weeks younger than Doelle, the name Deon took after her transition, so it was easy for them to care for her. They did have to gain some knowledge on the care of Lalafellian children, though, to make sure there was nothing extra or different that needed to be done.

As Cosette grew up, her biological parents never came to claim her, so she officially became a Lantoceins at age two. She was treated just as well as her sister and, despite the race difference, nobody seemed to question Doelle or Cosette in school or anywhere else when they said they were siblings. They occasionally got a cocked brow, but that was the worst of it. The difference in their sizes didn't become very apparent until about age five, when Doelle shot up like a spring flower and Cosette remained nearly the same. Even fully grown, Cosette was only a quarter of an inch over three feet. Doelle was tall for an elezen, reaching seven feet two inches.

As they grew and played together, Homme and Marie noticed that the two of them played differently than expected. Cosette seemed less interested in playing with toys and more interested in going outside and getting dirty, while Doelle spent a lot of time trying to make herself pretty and playing indoors. Doelle confided to Cosette at a young age that she didn't feel like a boy and soon after, expressed this to Homme and Marie.

With Cosette's and their parent's undying support, Doelle transitioned one summer outside of school and went in the next school year as Doelle. Elezen tended to be fair and beautiful anyway, so Doelle had no problems at all with her appearance, but Cosette was quick to hit anyone that tried to pick on her. Cosette was, suffice to say, made for adventure.

Before they even finished school, Cosette had already picked up several styles of fighting, pugilism, sword and shield, giant axe, lances and spears… she was a fighter. Her aptitude for magic was pitiful for a Lalafell, though. But that didn't bother her. She loved getting right up into people's faces and giving them what for. This made her love life a bit hard for her. Because of long standing, outdated traditions of men being the ones to take care of and court the ladies, her advances were usually met with discomfort or contempt. She still took several men into her bedroom, though.

Cosette didn't really seem to be the 'settle down and get married' type, but Doelle certainly was. Doelle started dating a boy in the last few years of school and the two of them are still together, having gotten married the moment they were able. She took his last name, becoming Doelle Pierriquet, but was still very much Cosette's sister. Doelle would accompany Cosette out to bars and other adventurer halls to make sure she didn't get into trouble, which she loved to do.

Cosette would usually find someone she thought attractive and immediately go up to them and declare in a loud, commanding voice: "Hey, cutie, you know you want to go home with a real woman tonight." The usual reaction was for the person to turn around and look at Doelle, since she was usually in visual range faster than Cosette, especially since Cosette loved much larger partners. Doelle used to get embarrassed and blush and then point down toward her little sister, but she learned after several instances of this to just not even look at the person and just keep pointing downward.

Cosette usually caught people off guard, but that worked to her advantage for one night stands and other flings. Her personality clashed with a lot of people, just due to her very limited filter. If she didn't like something, she would let anyone involved know. That's how she ended up becoming an adventurer, too.

It probably would have happened at some point anyway, but Cosette became an adventurer during a brief period when they had to ration certain meats and bitter roots because a giant monster had been eating and harassing the flocks and fields. She was complaining about not being able to order her favorite dish, being quite vocal about it, and the owner of the place got angry and yelled at her, saying that if she wanted it so badly, she would have to go kill the monster. And so she did. She used her limited experience with combat training to go out and tackle the beast, bringing Doelle and her husband with her for support.

The beast was no simple matter to deal with. It was huge and its skin was thick, making most weapons against it useless. Despite this, Cosette wielded her greataxe, a repurposed single-handed axe of a Roegadyn, with efficiency, keeping the beast distracted while Doelle's husband pelted it with magic and the elezen herself kept Cosette's wounds healed. After a long, strenuous battle, the beast finally gave up, trying to flee, but Cosette wouldn't let it get away. It would just come back later and cause problems all over again. She chased it down and finished it off with a heavy swing quickly followed with a skull sunder. Realizing she just took down the beast, she stood on top of it and shouted to the sky with laughter.

That was it for her. After that moment, she was addicted to the adrenaline of combat with giant monsters and other people. She took off looking for people needing help for similar reasons or wild beasts that needed culling and took on the jobs. Not long after, she started gaining a bit of a reputation and helped uncover a plot a few greedy people hatched to kidnap refugees and the homeless to sell to the Amalj'aa so that their Primal, Ifrit, could temper them. That is also when she discovered she possessed the Echo, a rare trait that allowed her to see into people's past as well as speak every language. As an added bonus, which really saved her skin, it also prevents her from being tempered by the Primals.

Unfortunately, this new discovery came with more troubles. She wanted nothing to do with the war against the beastmen tribes, but she was one of a handful of people that could face their Primals without the risk of becoming a slave to them. She would have given up on adventuring after finding out about the reason the kobolds were summoning their Primal, Titan, but she decided to just break away from the group she'd been travelling with to find her own path.

That is where she is currently, seeking out fame and fortune in the Coerthas Highlands. She wasn't welcomed there at first, but has warmed up to several people after helping them out. She writes and sometimes travels back home to Gridania to visit family, but otherwise stays mostly in the highlands. She may eventually go back to the Scions, the group of people with the Echo ability she helped with the Primal threats, but for now, she is not interested in their fight.
