First mate in name only, Jane was actually a Navy captain for a long while, her unmerciful tactics and aggression (and a prowess with a rapier) insured that she rose rather quickly through the ranks. And yet, the Navy life was much too boring for her. Being out on the water was nice, but she had a wanderlust that couldn't be ignored.

And then one day, her ship ran across Marianne's. One Navy crew buffet later, Jane left her hiding place in her own chambers and approached the stuffed-to-near-immobilization Marianne, starting to plot horrible ideas. Marianne couldn't control herself, she'd eaten the whole crew and now was in a horrible position to defend herself. And this probably wouldn't be the only time she'd put herself in a bad position like this. So she proposed that she join Marianne and be her "first mate"/co-captain, just to keep her from getting herself in over her head in meal size or combat. And, not really having any reason to the contrary, and a full belly keeping her from just devouring the panther in front of her, Marianne agreed to it, on the condition that she be able to change her mind later. As time went on, Jane proved herself very useful, and they became good friends. Jane's cooler head, knowledge of caring for a ship, and wanderlust matched well with Marianne's lust for treasure and adventure, and the two of them quickly became feared pirates together and established an incredible reputation that's held for many, many years!

Plus sometimes Marianne's gotta be told no, you can't eat that high-ranking officer, the whole navy will be after us if we don't kick him off at the nearest port somewhere, or no, maybe we shouldn't charge on at that gigantic ship with a hundred cannons, I know you're good but you're not that good, sweety.
