Augustus is the reject son of two royal demons who were only able to hatch several heirs (instead of the hundreds demons are typically capable of hatching), him being the first. Small, weedy, neurotic and insecure, he's been all but cut off from his high-ranking family, who see him as an embarrassment.
As well as the qualities listed above, Augustus is selfish, stingy, pessimistic and bitter. He works at the local library, despite hating books, reading and interacting with others (along with many other things).

Despite being the least suitable demon for the job, he acts as guardian to three of his several hundred nieces and nephews, who are similarly seen as being unworthy of their lineage (though not quite to the same extent). Augustus feels as though they're a burden on him and regularly makes this clear to them; frustratingly, they continue to tolerate his personality and mooch off of him.
