Apollyon is the last surviving mage of the thirteen who originally ripped a hole open to the After. He wakes after being acknowledged by a guardian in training Samarra, while visiting one of her dreams while imprisoned. Unaccustomed to his changed body he is rather clumsy and uses an heavy steel bar as a walking stick. He knocks things over and trips frequently. He also is afraid of heights because he's not sure if his wings would actually hold him aloft. Many of his beliefs and mannerisms come from his time as a human and he often forgets that he appearance says otherwise.

The energy released from the tear absorbs and destroys magic, turning the land and its inhabitants into zones absent of power. He has discovered that he is immune to most magic, despite retaining his own powers. He carefully manages it however as he remembers his companions literally burning away from their magic while they slept, some quicker than others. He helps as much as he is allowed by the current Mage Council, usually teaching spells lost during his 100 year slumber.
