Sundew Collective Intelligence
Drosera used to look like any other spoon-leaved sundew (Drosera Spatulata), but she was always different. There was something about her that would draw the attention of onlookers even among many of her kin. This is what drew the fae creature to her.
The fae found her one day when it would surely have been Drosera's last. The water source she had been using was drying up, dammed off by some creatures up the river. All she knew at this point was dying. But then he came to her, quite upset by her predicament. "To lose such a beautiful spirit would be tragic." The fae said to her as he changed her body. Her leaves and roots changed drastically, leaving her two long tentacles that double as roots and legs, a jaw with spiny protrusions on a wedge shaped head, and a pod on the back of it that resembled her original form. The pod was equipped with four long tentacles that had mucilage beaded tendrils covering the body and sepals sprouting at the tips. The fae smiled, "Now, go find the pleasures of the world and live, beautiful creature. I have given you a form more suited to surviving, for now," and then faded into a hazy, shadow-like cloud.
Eyeless and both thirsty and hungry, the small mobile plant crawled and slithered to a glowing warmth as she was becoming aware of all new sensations. Touch, hearing and smell. She acclimated to them within moments as that new small jaw opened and sunk needle-sharp spiny protrusions into a small juvenile creature. The little tasmanian-devil girl yelped out in surprised pain as blood flowed freely from her wound into Drosera's maw. As she learned of a new sensation, taste, the sundew's form began to take control of the child's genetic structure.
The child mewled and cried and screamed as her body's organs, flesh, and bone were torn asunder, leaving only the spine and brain in tact until new flesh, a mimicry of the tasmanian-devil's original form, replaced it. The next part of the transformation began after the child's knowledge, intelligence, and dreams all became a part of Drosera. Four arms, two with grasping hands and two with scythe-like tips, six eyes with the ability to see multiple spectra of light and near panoramic vision, a torso which was vaguely like the tasmanian-devil morph's on the outside, and leaves going back from the tip of her snout, getting larger and longer until they swoop down to her back, hanging over her pod, all grew from the child's vision of 'mother nature'. It was an interesting form, but Drosera was immediately happy with it.
With this new form, Drosera immediately went up the river to see the creatures that were choking off life from her former home, the child following along silently. Drosera found a village at the top of the river. It was populated by tasmanian-devils, beavers, and other mammalian morphs. They were responsible for killing her kin and nearly killing her, but she did not feel a need for revenge. Drosera immediately understood that life is about adaptation and survival. All she had to do was survive and adapt, and she knew just what she could do.
She pulled several seeds from her body and gave them to the young tasmanian girl. "Here, plant these or have the others eat these. They will never go hungry again." The child nodded her head and asked her, "Will it hurt, like it did with me?" Pain wracked Drosera's body, another new sensation, as the child thought of the transformation she went through moments ago.
"Yes. But you don't have to think about it, since they will be happier." Drosera knew that her seeds were different than they used to be. The little black ovum could now alter the genetic data of those they entered, just as she had when she bit the child. And apparently the child knew of this, too. They were connected.
She sent the child off and waited back, out of sight of the others. By the time the sun set, the entire village had become a part of her. The creatures living there grew leaves and shrubbery from their bodies and worked to help spread her influence throughout the forests and mountains.
Having converted an entire continent into her proselytes, Drosera deemed her 'collective' as safe for now. It had only been a year and she had learned more of the world than most do in several lifetimes. She was able to survive harsh dryness and bitter freezing cold now, so she decided to explore other areas without adding them to the collective. That is where she has gone now, out to see the world and do as she pleases. Her collective would be fine on their own for a while. Each part or person was able to do their own thing. They were just able to communicate with other proselytes via thought and had a pool of information that they all had access to and an overwhelming urge and desire to do whatever Drosera commands. Only her intelligence and thoughts were private.
Man I love this character, she's such a great blend of bizarre features/species. Probably one of the top terrifying monster designs I've seen and she doesn't depend at all on traditional horror tropes.
She's so awesome! I really am digging the design, and her interesting mouth/tongue! And her ears are so cute! <3
