When Rin decided to run off to join a bunch of criminals and mercenaries just so he could learn more about magic, he was given a "companion" that would report all his deeds and whereabouts to the people who wished to control him, namely an old cougar (Panthera, actually) named Arna. She had woven many magics about the little creature and thus over time, he was able to learn how to talk and gain true sentience. The griffon was named Night, due to his natural dark plumage. He really doesn't like other people to be honest. He was driven out of his own home because of his appearance, which wild griffons didn't appreciate. He does what he's told because there's nothing better to do really, and that's that. But the more he spends time with Rin, the more he comes to respect him, and eventually becomes his number one tutor when it comes to combination magic. Although he is often annoyed by the werefox, he ends up becoming so loyal to him, he stops obeying Arna.
