In a fantasy setting which pits dragon magic against human technology, Portos sided with the enemy. He championed human innovation to gain attention. Eventually, it gained him the wrong kind of attention. His fellow dragons had him silenced, quite brutally, and he would have died were it not for his new allies, who managed to intervene and replace the workings of his mangled throat with artificial tubes.
Portos now lives in the humans' capital city at the mercy of his rescuers. He publicly parades himself as a technological success story, but is secretly more than a little resentful and extremely self-conscious about his looks and artificial voice. His only real friend is his spunky assistant, Serabel.
He's not the biggest dragon around, but Portos is still pretty huge by human standards, with a long neck and tail, a low-slung quadrupedal body, and leathery wings too small to fly or glide. His dull brown skin is similar to elephant hide, with only a few tougher scales here and there.
Portos's most distinctive feature is his throat, covered in thick, lumpy scar tissue and missing a significant chunk in profile. The damaged portions of his esophagus and other vitals have been replaced with tubes, but without enough skin to cover them, they hang externally, exiting below his jawline and re-entering at various points above his breastbone. Thinner tubes also run from his nostrils and the corners of his mouth as part of a system to bypass/disable his noxious breath weapon. Portos actually breathes from a hole low down on his neck, which has been fitted with a disc-shaped filter.
When drawing Portos: The amount and arrangement of tubes doesn't have to be exact, as long as the general idea of big throat tubes/little face tubes is there. Also don't stress over his horns. I just make them kinda wavy, other folks have drawn them spiralled, either way works! I'm cool with gore if you want to make his throat wound more, uh, recent.
Fun facts: Portos is highly sensitive to spicy foods. Musical instruments are his favorite human invention. He does the cat loaf pose sometimes. Like all dragons, he is illiterate. Some unlucky engineer has had to dismantle the artificial part of his esophagus and pull out a stuck goat leg at least once.
