Kumo is a demon and the son of the Dark Prince, the leader of the demons. He was born with a special gift, as all demons are, that he doesn't particularly like. Most people refer to it as the Poker Face. It is an inability to display any sort of emotion. He dislikes it severely and has a very pessimistic outlook on life because of it.

Kumo is obsessed with being civil, kind, and hospitable. While all demons are bound to always tell the truth, most of them prefer to think of creative ways to leave out crucial details. Quite to the contrary of the norm, Kumo is almost always direct and specific with what he says. He severely dislikes lies, restrictions on personal freedom, kami, incivility, sarcasm, and a lack of courtesy.

As soon as Kumo became aware of his gift and how it made him different from others, he hated himself instantly and vowed to find a way to overcome it. Since that is naturally impossible, he started to be counseled by a demon doctor simply called the Sacred Lady. While she tried to help Kumo live with his gift as best she could, he wasn't easily convinced of its value.

After one visit at the age of eight, he happened upon Abe by mere circumstance. The little girl was harvesting a soul and since he had never met a shinigami before, the whole act seemed incredibly appauling. He yelled at Abe, and condemned her actions. She made light of the situation and, ultimately, it intrigued him. They became friends, and eventually Abe opened up to Kumo. She told Kumo about her past and that she guarded her feelings by being the way she is. He became rather fond of her, considering her a sister, and was always there to lend an ear and hold her hand.

Consequently, Abe fell in love with Kumo. Kumo, being a demon, is bound to always tell the truth. Since he has no interest in girls, he told Abe as much. She took it rather personally, and became a boy from that day on. Despite several years of trying, Kumo kept turning him down in earnest hope that he would become the little girl he once knew. He never did. Kumo felt incredibly bad despite telling Abe the truth, but eventually worked up the courage to tell Abe the additional reason that he had rejected him, that he saw him more as a sister, and that was the end of their friendship.

Kumo lived a fairly normal and quiet life, at least as normal as a demon's could be, and eventually came across a young boy names Kaworu. From the ages of five until he was eleven he would silently stand in the shadows and watch him, remarking at his emotions and how he acted in his dreams. Kumo fell in love with him, but convinced himself that a relationship would never be possible with him or anyone else because of his inability to display emotions. So one day he resolved to never see Kaworu again, and went back to wandering the world aimlessly.

Several years later Kumo, tragically, was the one called to try to talk Kaworu into becoming a demon, but because of Kumo's feelings toward Kaworu he took a very different approach to the situation. He had been asked to try to bring Kaworu into the demonic fold by his father, and had initially pleaded to not be given the assignment. Eventually he relented, though every insult he heard from Kumo, every glance at his face, every bit of biterness, distrust, and anger that he received from Kaworu hurt him deeply. Despite that, he eventually confessed to Kawor that he had known him since he was very young, and decided to devoted himself to Kaworu as a friend.
