Abe, or Chiyo, is well over 500-years-old. Now male, he is a demon but was formerly a human, a usagi kami, and a shinigami. To begin with, Chiyo, being Abe's human name, died shortly after her eighth birthday. Her father was unfortunately a drunkard, and as such Abe has little tolerance for alcohol. At any rate, Chiyo's father he was unable to fulfill his duties or maintain employ, so he gained several loans and favors from some Yakuza to keep up his habit and keep his family sparsely taken care of. Chiyo was a very happy child, and was very dedicated to her mother. She was perfectly happy with this existance, but unfortunately bad dealings with Yakuza rarely end well. When he was unable to repay his debts and he seemed to not respond to the various beatings and threats, they decided to go directly for his family.

The Yakuza forced Chiyo's father to rape her, beheading him during the process. If that wasn't horrific enough, they went for her mother. She begged and pleaded, despite how shocked and horrified she already was, for them to take her life instead. She promised to do anything. They merely stabbed her for interfering and left her to slowly die from internal bleeding after watching her mother suffer the same fate as her father. She held onto her mother's corpse until she let out her last breath. When humans die for a noble deed, they become a kami. Chiyo's only desire despite the pain she had endured and the terror of watching her father die was to make sure that the Yakuza didn't hurt her mother. While she was unsuccessful, her death was due to a selfless action as she was reborn as Abe, a usagi kami.

As an usagi kami Abe had control over the element fire. She could manipulate it and bend it to her will. Although she as a particularly talented kami, she was unsettled and didn't enjoy the a particular facet of the usagi community, being their communal structure. She felt that the family she had become a part of was a facade, and wanted desperately to know about her life as a human. One of the few benefits, for some, of being a kami is that you forget about your life as a human. While it was certainly in Abe's best interest not to know about her human life and she was told as such, she distrusted the blanket statement without any reasoning behind it. She acted out, attempting to gain what she wanted. When she eventually determined that she would never be told, she ran away from the usagi kami village, literally and figuratively burning every bridge as she left to try and become a rogue kami.

The Okami, who are the ancient kami that created Japan, decided to punish Abe by forcing her to become a shinigami. Being a shinigami is something that most individuals do not elect to do, and is rather a dark and bitter task. When transformed, Abe was put under the care of an elder shinigami named Kuro who would teach her how to do her job. Her very first assignment was to take the soul of her surviving sister, and when Abe lay her eyes on her old face she immediately recognized her. She refused to commit the act, but Kuro forced her to do so, pulling her hair and demeaning her. He took quite a bit of delight when she actually took her first soul, assuming that it would make Abe more comfortable with taking others, but Abe never seemed to acclimate to the idea. When Kuro found that motivating Abe was difficult, he awakened her memories and forced him to relive them for three days straight. Anytime she stepped out of line, he would remind her that he would do the same thing again.

As time progressed, rather than becoming bitter, Abe decided instead to place a facade of sarcasm and playfulness on. She did her job as she was told to do, never complaining, but her demeanor made her an annoyance to the other shinigami, particularly Kuro. Most shinigami are very serious and somewhat twisted, because becoming used to reaping souls tears at one's heart and ability to have compassion. Abe, rather, decided to treat it as a game, and refused to give up her playfulness despite suggestions to the contrary. As a result she was often beaten or tortured for committing minor infractions, but she took each without ever letting Kuro see her cry.

One day, Kumo, a young demon boy, came across Abe while he was walking around Tokyo. Kumo was then eight-years-old, and had just left an appointment with the sacred lady, a very kind demon healer who can read minds by kissing someone's forehead. She had been trying to help Kumo deal with his special gift as a demon, being an inability to display emotions, that he severely disliked and still doesn't like to this day. When he happened upon Abe by mere circumstance, the little girl was harvesting a soul. Since he had never met a shinigami before, the whole act seemed incredibly appauling. He yelled at Abe, and condemned her actions. She made light of the situation and, ultimately, it intrigued him. They became friends, and eventually Abe opened up to Kumo. She told Kumo about her past and that she guarded her feelings by being the way she is. He became rather fond of her, considering her a sister, and was always there to lend an ear and hold her hand.

Consequently, Abe fell in love with Kumo. Kumo, being a demon, is bound to always tell the truth. Since he has no interest in girls, he told Abe as much. She took it rather personally, and became a boy from that day on. To this day Abe has never turned into a girl again, and despite several years of trying, Kumo kept turning him down in earnest hope that he would become the little girl he once knew. He never did. Kumo felt incredibly bad despite telling Abe the truth, but eventually worked up the courage to tell Abe that he had rejected him, that he saw him more as a sister, and that was the end of their friendship.

For one hundred and eight years Abe's life was fairly normal. He performed his duties as a shinigami, kept his rather unique attitude, but one day in the middle of attempting to collect a rather beligerent old woman's soul, he was called to the altar of his family which, as a kami, he had been bound to guard. He met Kaworu, the last member of his family, and due to his obligation had to protect him until his issues were resolved and his life was set straight. Kaworu bore a lot of anger and bitterness from his neglectful father who had died on the day that Abe was forced to appear, and had closeted a lot of his emotions away, working and collecting material goods instead of facing his actual problems.

In the course of helping Kaworu find peace, Kaworu fell in love with Kotaro, a then tanuki kami but now demon, and Kaworu's heart began to soften. It softened so much that both the demons and Okami took notice of what his special gift would be as either, and they took part in trying to court him to their side. Kumo, tragically, was the one called to try to talk Kaworu into a demon, but because Kumo had secretly loved Kaworu since he was a child he took a very different approach to the situation. He had been asked to try to bring Kaworu into the demonic fold by his father, the Dark Prince who is the leader of the demons, and he initially pleaded to not take the assignment. Eventually he relented, though every insult he heard from you, every glance at your face, every but Kaworu initially treated him with anger, sarcasm, and bitterness. This made Kumo's heart ache more than anything else in the world had. Despite that, he devoted himself to Kaworu as a friend. He foresook the path that he had chosen for his life and decided, instead, to be by Kaworu's side for all eternity as a friend and secondary guardian.
