Okina is a young Japanese woman often depicted between the ages of 10 and 19 years. She is 5 ft 1 and weighs approximately 115 lbs. Her orientations include asexual and hetero-romantic. Noteable characteristics include her long wispy black hair (a blunt bang and two pieces of tied hair frame her face) , an evening-color kimono, banded calves, and a smooth white mask with slit eyes. She can appear in a variety of forms ranging from full human to an orange field fox. All forms in between show her animal characteristics.

Okina is possessed by a kitsune at a young age because she accidently steals its hoshi no tama, instead believing it is a rare gem. The star ball brings bad luck to her home, and soon the fox spirit too. Afterwards, Okina is cast between worlds, ebbing in and out of reality and spirit. She does not have a place. She is forced to wander the two realms on her own until she meets three grey foxes who quickly become her companions, protectors and teachers. Okina harnesses her power of illusion through smoke and ghost fire, and finds ways of using it to her advantage in order to obtain food, shelter, clothing, trinkets, and other necessities from living humans.
