Backstory: Shadow comes from an exclusive pack somewhere in northwest Asia. Each member of the pack was judged by the sign that appeared on their back legs and the color of the pelt. The pups were each born with a unique sign (or word) and color palette to go along with it, as well as matching eyes. If something on the color palette did not match the sign, then the individual pup was named 'impure' and expelled from the pack. As you can guess, Shadow never exactly grew out of his 'baby blues'. Destined to be the next alpha according to hid bloodline, he was chased out regardless by his own siblings, parents, and friends. After those events he ran off to the west; America.
