    ...I don't understand! WHAT HAPPENED?

      She... Broke character?

Either she has some kind of condition that caused her to spill the tea or something else. Regardless, her master beat the shit out of her for no damn reason.

... Japanese culture values precision and finesse, being that the comic is based on that culture, and likely borrows much from it's historical reality, Nae was beaten for spilling drink on her client's robe.

Though it was only a mistake, for them, it was an utter failure, disgrace and insult. Acting as disgusted with her as they might have felt would have been a disgrace on the client--it's a society based heavily on appearances.

TL;DR You're worthless if you break character.

Okay, well I did learn something. I'm still fuzzy on what caused her to break character. Something happened to her, within or without, that caused the drink to spill. That is at the core of my question, though this insight into Japanese culture is enlightening.

Glad I could help! The other part, that my friend is something for our dear artist to reveal in time.

Part of me wants to be patient. The rest of my mind is insisting frantically that there must be something I missed to provide the key to figuring out the source of her slip-up!

One way or another, I'm looking forward to the next page!
