This little fellow is a creature you won't see outside of the fir forests of the Pacific Northwest. The Douglas Squirrel has markings like a fox squirrel but is only about the size of a large chipmunk. Their genus name, Tamiasciurus, actually means "chipmunk-squirrel." They don't do well in urban areas but thrive in places like the Tualitin Hills Nature Park.
Sorry for the poor photo quality, this was the only Douglas Squirrel I could get to hold still long enough to get a photo of in the dim light of the forest floor, and I was on the phone when I snapped this pic.
