Dragon sprites and concept art (Old art!)

tapewolf

I very rarely post art that I've drawn myself from the ground up. Most of my submissions are things which I've coloured. This is an exception.
It was drawn on paper around Feb 2003, digitized and then digitally coloured and turned into sprites using Autodesk Animator in DOS (most likely emulated with DOSemu by then). The portrait was drawn digitally with Animator.

It's perhaps worth mentioning that Animator was state-of-the-art in 1990, and the .FLI animations it created were the default cutscene format in PC games for about the next 5 years. Serpent Isle and Ultima 7, for instance. It was given away for free on a PC magazine around 1994 to try and get people to purchase Animator Pro. Animator maxed out at 320x200 in 256 colours, and had no layer support. But it made a great sprite editor, especially if you abused the 'animation' to turn it into a giant flipbook of artwork.

Anyway. The subject is a Drakaan, a member of an ancient and wise race who accidentally started the dragon legends by visiting Earth in ancient times. This artwork is from a game I was developing at the time which I've recently resumed development on.
But I thought it might be fun to upload some actual programmer art for a change.

(Contrary to popular belief, I do actually like dragons. It's just that DMFA doesn't, and that universe is where most of my creative energies have gone lately.)
