Day 36: Hunter + Ty the Tasmanian Tiger
I hope you'll forgive me if, looking back, it's difficult to remember what my frame of mind was at the time. This "week" was painfully extended. But that's alright.
Poor, poor Hunter. You were the absolute gayest part of Road Rovers, and that's including Blitz's blatant self love and the tsundere relationship with Exile. Yet you were the token straight man. Somehow, I felt you needed to be punished for that.
Fun fact. I bought all the Ty the Tasmanian Tiger games solely so I could get material for this project. And I was amazed with how boringly formulaic they were in design, but had a very interesting aesthetic.
I really like how the background on this one turned out. The kinda distant-storm-rumblings you get in the flatter parts of the US. I think I took inspiration for it from the first boss fight of the first Ty game. The cars are just photos I painted over, but they weren't meant to be the focus in the first place.
What the hell was I doing with the shading, though? Looks fucking awful.
Day 37: Gaomon + Carlos (Carmelita) Montoya Fox
HOO BOY, that chalkboard. The fun I had with that shit. Make sure you study that one for the trivia questions, it's a freaking goldmine if you can decipher my bullshit.
I blatantly copied I mean paid homage to the short comic that bridged Sly 2 and 3 for the impetus of this pic. Carmelita engulfed in conjecture about her ringtailed rascal, while the beleaguered background love interest tries his best to be the least bit worthy of her attention. Then she tells him to get her coffee. And then says she doesn't drink coffee.
What a bitch, am I right?
So in place of her erstwhile unrequited admirer, I just stuck in Gaomon and made a joke about his boxing gloves. He's the only Digimon I've done so far, and I think this is where the idea for how they exist in this world started to percolate.
Heh. Percolate. Cuz coffee.
I'M INGENIOUS, DAMMIT.
Day 38: Bagheera + Tai Lung
Yeesh, I barely put in ANY clues for Tai Lung in this one. ...Or Bagheera, for that matter. I guess I trusted they'd be recognizable enough?
Oh my GOD Tai Lung's chin. LOOK AT IT. It's like Jorgen von Strangle and the Crimson Chin had a lovechild that was adopted by Varian Wrynn and Deathwing.
This was the start of an... odd short series of sequel pics. In which I severely abused my "original" redesign of Tony the Tiger to not-so-great effect. Oh well. They can't all be gems, am I right?
...Oh my god I just remembered I was still in SCHOOL FOR THESE.
Day 39: Colonel Ivanod Spigot + Tony Tony Chopper
Antlers are the mindkiller. Antlers are the little death etc etc
I went with the 'transformed' design for Chopper in this one, because doing his, erm...'chibi' form would've made me feel weird. But, c'mon, given the choice between prepubescent fawn and studly buck beast, can you really blame me?
I nailed the rape face, though. Well done, me. A+. I'M A PIRATE
I worry I didn't make Spigot portly-porky enough. Something to tweak in a potential sequel, I suppose.
Oh, yeah, baby. Write that lisp phonetically. NO. Write it phonetically...AND INCONSISTENTLY
Day 40: Jack Case + Dug
Two Talespin characters in a row. Resplendent.
Putting pants on normally pantsless characters always feels a little weird. Clothing a normally naked character, somehow, not so much.
I went through several iterations of the idea that Dug would be some kind of fratbro who instantly said whatever was on his mind, which is unfortunate, because his mind's kind of dim and dingy. But I had to work in the collar, really, or I'd be getting too clever for my own good. ...says the guy who had the character Dug from Up say "I want to dig something up."
Jack was only in the one episode of Talespin, and I used references to the plot of that episode to try to make sure to steer people in the right direction. There's a fun headcanon I've seen where he comes back as a vengeful villain after getting left behind that I may explore later. Which is especially funny, because the request for Jack was made by a squirrel!
IT ALL COMES TOGETHER
Day 41: Mudge + Little John
2 years later, and my boyfriend finally cracked the whip and told me EXACTLY what he wanted to see me draw, because drawing it would make me feel accomplished rather than wallowing as I did about how long it'd been since I last drew anything. And hey, he was right.
Full disclosure...I've never read Spellsinger. But he has. So I milked him for every detail he thought I could fit in. The hat, the vest, the phonetic accent. I feel now like the explicit callout to the name of his origin was kinda gratuitious, but he was a difficult guess.
I had to resist the urge to 'modernize' Little John's outfit. People wear all sorts of shit in space, right? Besides, it doesn't look half bad.
And for anyone who's wondering, Baloo and John are totally cousins in this continuity.
Day 42: Modo + Dinobot
===THE TRIVIA
I'm trying something new, for our trivia questions. I won't list them here. Instead I'll have them on an external quiz, which will take the impetus of the participants to format their answers or what have you. So have at it! I swear you'll see another one of these before half a decade's gone by.
