Developed in the US by Bernard C. White and Arnolds Streinbergs and initially produced by Israeli Military Industries (IMI), the Magnum Research Desert Eagle is a large semi-automatic pistol chambered for larger cartridges than typically used in such handguns. The use of larger, higher-pressured rounds is enabled by the fact that the Desert Eagle uses a gas-operated system much like most semi-automatic rifle designs. Such a system taps part of the gas created by a cartridge is fired to cycle the action, allowing for a sturdier mechanism capable of handling rounds which generate a higher amount a pressure. The Desert Eagle is available in a wide range of chamberings, though the most iconic is the .50 AE (Action Express) cartridge. Due to its size, power, and large and unique appearance, the Desert Eagle quickly became an icon of action films, television shows, and video games from the 1980s to today. Today, the Desert Eagle is manufactured in the United States and is available in a variety of finishes including black, chrome, gold, and gold tiger stripe.
