Developed in the 1990s, the Heckler & Koch G36 was developed as a replacement for the German Bundeswehr's aging G3 battle rifles following the unification of Germany and subsequent cancellation of the G11 project. Chambered for the NATO-standard 5.56x45mm rifle cartridge and utilizing polymer construction in much of its design, the rifles was adopted by the Bundeswehr with production beginning in 1996 and the first deliveries being made in 1997. While many variations of the G36 have been produced and have seen service with military and law enforcement agencies across the globe, one of the more popular examples is the G36k (kurz, or short) which features a shorter barrel and thus a more compact weapon. Notable users of the HK G36k include the Estonian Special Operations Force, the Bundeswehr, Lithuanian Armed Forces, the US Capitol Police, and the Police Service of Northern Ireland.
