The Panzerfaust was an anti-tank weapon design developed and field by Nazi Germany during World War II. Inexpensive to produce and designed to be deployed by an individual soldier, the weapon proved to be quite effective in destroying enemy armor and forcing armored elements to wait for infantry reinforcement, especially in the close-quarters fighting of urban combat. Several variations of the basic design were developed, differentiated primarily by the effective range of each weapon. The weapon was also a single-shot design and the empty tube was discarded after the weapon was fired. The Panzerfaust design was field not only by Germany but also by Finland, Hungary, and the Italian Social Republic. Captured weapons were also fielded by American and Soviet forces.
