2011-14 Hyundai Sonata (AutoSkunk consumer review) by ShawnSkunk

2011-14 Hyundai Sonata (AutoSkunk consumer review)

ShawnSkunk

well alright, it looks like I'm gonna do a used car review this time (this was a request from a furry on FA who's shopping for used car and wanted a furry's opinion on a 2011 thru 2014 Hyundai Sonata GLS.
I've been doing a lot of searching around for some of the best customer reviews just so I can have enough info to write the best review I could write on this, so let's get started.

what's a Sonata?, some of you may ask.
well it's a midsize sedan that Hyundai's been producing since 1985 and is sold world wide, it used to be called called the Hyundai Stellar II and it was produced to compete with compete with another Korean car (the Daewoo Royale), and it was eventually imported to North America in 1988.
since it's release in 85?, I can obviously assume it was a mega hit having been in production this long and world wide and especially in the United States where it likely really took off.
let's get to talking about the Sonata from 2011 to 2014, the sixth gen Sonata was introduced in 2009 and sales in the North American market began in 2010.
there were some engine options to choose from:
for fuel economy conscious minded driver you had the standard issue 2.4 liter inline four with 190 horsepower, that was good for 24 MPG city and 35 MPG highway, pretty good mileage with that much horsepower.
for those who like an adrenaline rush and power in their cars and going fast (like me for example), there was a turbocharged version of that same engine that makes 274 horsepower (wwooww), while this produces less fuel economy it's an ideal car for those who like to go fast.
and both engines can come equipped with a standard 6 speed transmission (both an automatic version and a manual, wwooww).
another thing about this car I want to addressed is the styling, the styling looks fantastic, a definite upgrade from the slightly more bland styling of the previous gen Sonata, it didn't matter what angle you looked at it, it almost always looks like it's going fast even when sitting still, it's lines almost give an impression that it had sculpted by the wind, the Koreans really upped their styling when they produced this car and it only got waay better with the new current gen sonata, gone were the days of boring bland Korean cars, the Koreans were sending a clear message, demanding your attention the marketplace.

safety:
while performance and styling is good, safety is even more important and is usually a top priority among automakers especially Hyundai, so the Sonata has usually roster of safety features out in a Hyundai:

electronic brake force distribution (SCREEECH!!! oof!)

front seatbelt pretensioners (Kent Fox: I can't feel any circulation O_o)

pasenger head restraint whiplash protection system (crack! OOWW!! MY NECK!!)

4-wheel ABS brakes (watch me Kent I'm gonna do a braking turn, here I go! OwO SCREECH! CRASH!!)

rear door child safety locks (click! Kent falls out of the car AAHH!! Kent!! OH MY GOD!!)

daytime running lights (why are my lights turning on, IN BROAD DAYLIGHT!!)

rear center 3-point belt (tightens comfortable Kent? X3, Kent Fox: GASPS!, I'll take that as a yes X3)

child seat anchors (OH MY GOD! KENT! DIDN'T YOU ANCHOR DOWN THE BABY!?, Kent Fox: I FORGOT!, I'M SORRY! QnQ pulls the string on a baby doll "momma" oh wait it's okay he's fine :3, Kent Fox: oh thank god)

dual front side mounted airbags ( https://youtu.be/3vgzDdcG1HA?t=104 )

front and rear head airbags ( https://youtu.be/30XaU2eWi_I?t=12 )

stability control (Kent Fox: AAAAAHHHHH!!!!!! SCREECH!!, Kent!, just relax!, countersteer!)

emergency braking assist (beep beep*SCREECH! ow!, OH FUCK THIS SHIT!, I'VE HAD IT WITH THIS SYSTEM! KICK! OOOWWWW!!!! MY PAW!!)

passenger airbag occupent sensing deactivation (Kent Fox: why isn't it deactivating?, because you're too big kent, it's for little kids)

rear height adjustable headrests (click, click click, ooh, click click click click click click, hey! quit it! stop playing with those!, you're not a cub anymore)

remote anit-theft alarm system (BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! ARRGH!, I DIDN't TURN THE FUCKING THING ON! DX)

2 front headrests (soo cozy X3)

3 rear headrest (soo cozy X3)

tire pressure monitoring (flat tire did you forget to check the tire pressure before we left on our road trip?)

traction control (SCREEECH!! AAAAHHHH!!!, Kent! seriously!, just calm down! it's not that hard to recover from a spinout!)

ventilated front disc brakes/solid rear disc brakes (slams the brakes*SCREECH!*SMASH! oh sorry Kent, should've had your seatbelt on)

emergency interior trunk release (Kent Fox: AAAHHH!, HELP! HELP!, I CAN'T GET OUT!, SOMEONE HELP PLEASE!, facepalms there's a glow in the dark trunk release tab inside the trunk you idiot, Kent Fox: click oh hehe , I knew that X3)

engine immobilizer (*whacks engine with monkey wrench like Engineer from TF2)

auto delay off headlmaps (instant blackout*SCREECH!*CRASH!

front fog and driving lights (I can't see shit in this fog Renton Whitetail suddenly appears on the road* AAAHHH! SWERVE!*SCREECH!*CRASH!)

dusk sensing headlamps (headlights suddenly come on MY EYES!)

now not all of these features come available in just one model, like the engine immobilizer, auto delay off headlmaps, front fog and driving lights, and dusk sensing headlamps for example, those features were only equipped on the SE model, but the rest of the safety features listed above come standard on all models, all in all?, it's safe car with a five star goverment crash test safety rating.
reliability and value:
there was recall on the car once that was reported back in the 2016, the problem was that the engine would fail and the car would need to be towed to a garage for repairs, according to one owner, she had to have her car repaired due to this problem and it costed her $6,000 dollars, fortunately as far as I know this was the only recall on the car years ago and so far up to this point I haven't heard of any other recalls on the car.
but as reliability and value go, it's not so bad as long as you take good care of the car keep it regulary maintained and looking ship shape, a 2011-14 Sonata well kept and in excellent condition and at high market value can be worth over $8,000 dollars, at it's lowest value?, $4,000 dollars, and average value?, nearly $6,500 dollars.

option packages:
not much to talk in this category because I could find anything that would tell me what's in these option packages and there are four, but I can name them out so here they are:

first one: GLS popular equipment package plus navigation

second one: option group 01 (I don't know what means, to me it sounds like a muscle car performance package but I doubt that's what that is, I can't see Sonata packin a V8 under it's hood anytime soon " https://youtu.be/sdUNdV27td0?t=8 ")

third one: GLS popular equipment package (basically the first one but without navigation)

fourth one: SE navigation and sunroof package (only available on the SE model)

in car entertainment:

exterior options:
the usual oprions of course:

mud guards

bumper applique

wheel locks

and your choice of whatever color you want (so long as it's from the brochure selection of course)

cubic space in the car is decent as well:

40.0 inches of head room

57.9 inches of front shoulder room

55.2 inches of front hip room

for rear seating you have:

37.8 inches of rear head room

54.9 inches of rear hip room

56.7 inches of rear shoulder room

34.6 inches of rear leg room

the measurements:
all the measurements of the car's size, since this is just about the GLS model I'll only name out the size specs of the GLS:

62.9 inch front rack

189.8 inch length

16.4 cubic feet of trunk cargo space with all seats in place

a drag co-efficient of 0.28cd (not bad)

57.9 inch height

EPA interior volume: 120.2 cubic feet

110.0 inch wheelbase

72.2 inch width

and a 62.9 inch rear track

so far I've covered all the options and dimensions of this car but haven't mention tire option and that's because it can differ on a used car depending if they changed to a different set or not by the previous owner, but I can say it does obviousely with a steel donut for flat tire emrgencies, depending on how it was optioned out?, there's a selection between hubcaps, alloy wheels, or even steel wheels if you like to be as cheap as possible, but other than that this has been the full review.
is it a good car?, it likely can be if you find one that's been taken care of and at least in good condition, it holds it seems to hold it's value pretty good, and at first sounded like it had mechanical problems prior to the recall but should already been taken care of by this point and according to some of the consumer reviews I came across online?, it sounds like a very reliable car, though I would using your own judgement for that.

okay that's enough consumer review work now, this has been my first consumer review and likely my only consumer review for a while until I get a driver's license, thank you all for reading this review, and I'll see you on the next AutoSkunk Review. :3
