The heart of the young Stryx seemed to stop during the free fall towards the beast and she closed her eyes, maybe for the last time. It all happened too fast to comprehend, all she felt was the breath of the creature, the rapid change in direction and something sliding between her clutching talons for a second. After that, she was falling towards the river as a cry came from the monster.

Etesian steered from her fall and, while gaining height, saw the creature losing balance, confirming that she managed to land a strike on the massive Stryx’ neck. The Harpia started flying away from her with all her might. A heavy thud made her understand that the beast had crashed or at least landed somewhere in the canyon, so it was the moment to give all she had. She could not look back, not now. Whatever happened to the beast wasn’t her problem. The adrenalin that was flowing through her veins was so much that the chest wounds barely burned despite the furious muscle movement.

The wind seemed to carry a familiar voice, but before Etesian could understand what it was, a blood-freezing wrathful screech and a loud noise made all her feathers ruffle up instantly.

It was not over.
