Unicorns are seen in many cultures with a variety of forms. In general, these incredible beasts are seen as equine or deer-like in shape with a long, beautiful horn on their forehead and an air of magic about them. Unicorns were believed to be real, just as dragons were. For centuries, it was believed Unicorns were simply very rare and elusive. Some thought that it had been hunted to extinction. The Greek Unicorn, or Ch-i Lin, was the first representation of this creature when Greek physician Ctesias recorded fantastic tales from travelers depicting equine creatures larger than horses with bodies of white, eyes of dark blue, heads of a dark red, and a large horn over a foot long with white, red, and black colors seen within it. Additional representations of the Greek unicorn included a goat's beard, boar's tail, and even sometimes the head of a stag. In Chinese lore, the Unicorn had multiple names including Kirin, Sin-you, or Ki-lin. This creature was a sign of good luck and possessed an incredible 12 foot long horn and a skin of five sacred colors. At times, it had the body of an antelope or a lion's mane. The appearance of a Ki-lin was said to occur after the passing of a sage or important ruler. This variation of Unicorn could also be seen with cloven hooves, scales, antlers, with jewels as a part of their bodies, or with flowing or flame-like aspects flowing from them. While some cultures related the Unicorn as a large animal, others such as descriptions found in the 12th-century bestiary called the Physiologus described it as a small goal-like creature often coming up to only approximately knee height. In any culture, the Unicorn possessed an array of beautiful colors. Even when looking at the pure white Unicorn, it was said to shine with a brilliance. While Unicorns were seen as a sign of innocent purity, they were also feral and wild animals representing the wildness of nature. It was said the horn of a unicorn held powerful magic able to purify waters and neutralize poisons. Kings sought the power of this horn due to their fears of being poisoned. Whether real or not, the Unicorn is still seen as a symbol of awe and wonder.
