Too Shrewd For Dreams by Friday Dandin

Too Shrewd For Dreams

Friday Dandin

A flash fiction piece I did for Rainfurrest's Flash Fiction panel with Whye Yote and Hunter! We were asked to write a Lovecraftian horror story set in space using a naked mole rat, vulture, and jellyfish character. The main conflict was asked to be "Technical Difficulties." I was pretty pleased with how this turned out!

That... really reminded me of something by Larry Niven. I could easily see that showing up in a Man-Kzin Wars anthology.
Creates a nice atmosphere in the ship (Pardon the pun!) and quickly establishes not all is well between the Captain and his crew. I might have liked a touch more on the... object though. Perhaps a flashback to the work they had to do to get such a tiny thing on-board?

The ending was good, but really didn't say too much. There's only so far you can go in a short shorty, but it did leave a lot to the imagination. I am slightly torn on the final resting place of the creature though. I'm guessing it was looking for a host, but it just as easily could have found refuge on the ship itself.

And who ever heard of a chicken being born without cracking the white of its egg!? :-p
