A tumblr mutual of mine is to blame for this, he owes me 6 bazillion dollars for daring to question the lack of existence of a muppet like “hairy monster” Pokemon. As such I felt the overwhelming need to make one even though I made a “never fucking again” pledge with myself to never make up a Pokemon again.

Oh well at least it got through my about month long inability to draw due to depression (like actual clinical depression not “G was just sad”).

Anyway if it isn’t obvious Silmy evolves into Monstet probably via level up maybe idk. Stat wise I don’t have any concrete numbers but these mons are tanky as heck kinda like the Chansey line. Also know these are biological creatures not possessed objects like the Shuppet line hence why they aren’t ghost types.

Btw after posting this to my social networking places I found out there is an ability called Fluffy that was introduced in Sun and Moon. Let's just pretend that's one of their possible abilities. I didn't feel like editing the image just to add an arbitrary stat to it.

    lol this is great!
one day pokemon will rule the world, you cannot avoid drawing them again.

:o true enough. Pokemon is very popular it seems! Thanks for the comment :)

Oh god you're going on a whole slew of fake fan stuff aren't you? What's next Monster Hunter?

    • Link

D: I hope not I have to get back to working on my sci fi now. But if I were to make another fan creature design I'd probably go for a fan yokai for Yo-kai Watch. I've never actually played Monster Hunter so I don't really know much about the kind of designs the creatures have. It would be hard for me to emulate the style!

I love how these fakes have that "generic monster" appearance that many Kanto Pokémon had. Monstet seems like a pretty decent tank as well; Fluffy only helps matters.

:D thank you. Yeah they are kinda based a little bit more on what you would see in gen 1 though I will say of all the fake Pokemon I made over the years I feel these would fit pretty ok into new games as well. I think it may be the roundness of the designs, most old Pokemon were a lot more... uh... lumpy? lol I don't know how to put that in simple terms, they're not angular they're just less smooth in design.

You're welcome. Many Kanto Pokémon looked more hostile in their classic depictions as well. Gen 2 and onward made the designs look much friendlier for the target audience, though. That's not necessarily a good or bad thing, though, but it's a pattern I have observed. As of the 20th anniversary, Game Freak seems to know the age range of their actual audience.

I wonder what a fanmade Yo-kai would look like in your style, though. Maybe you could loosely base it on one of your xeno-people species in Entirety, unless you want to avoid crossovers.

Apologies for the slightly late reply but tbh one idea I have to Yo-kai would be making some based on the cryptids/ghosts/creatures of folklore found throughout the western world.
I mean I'm not mad because I get that YW's target demographic is little kids but I was kinda really disappointed pretty much all the "Merican" yo-kai from YW3 were based on things stereotypically associated with the US/the western world like cheerleaders and hamburgers. They could have definitely had a yo-kai based on something like the ogopogo or the jersey devil. Things like that are basically as close as you get here to the concept of yokai so its feel like a massive missed opportunity.

          • Link

Yeah, it was a bit disappointing that all of the Merican Yo-kai focused on stereotypes, rather than Western folklore. I mean, couldn't at least some of the stronger (read: C-Rank or higher) Merican Yo-kai have been based on stuff like Wendigo, Jersey Devil, Ogopogo, and so on?

We ended up receiving a lot of space Yo-kai, such as Usapyon.

            • Link

:o Yeah I find it interesting how many space ones we got, not that I'm complaining as a bit of a nerd for aliens but yeah there's just so much folklore type stuff they could have used. Anyway maybe someday over the rainbow I'll actually draw some designs because I do have a few folklore/cryptid type things in mind I think would translate well into the yokai watch type style (e.g: jersey devil, black shuck, krampus, mothman. Heck even a creepypasta creature like slenderman would work well given it already has a kinda inspiring type ability in the form of messing with electronics).

              • Link

Jersey Devil and Mothman would work really well as Classic Merican Yo-kai, particularly the stronger kind. I do have to admit that a lot of recolors exist in the first two games, which makes me wonder if they're just individual characters, rather than whole species,

                • Link

:o yeah that's a good question. I mean they have their own entries in the medallion which suggest they're beyond just colour variants like Pokemon. Though there is some oddities between game to story meshing because from what I recall the NPC walkappa in the second game doesn't evolve into Appak but rather its rare colour variant Supyo which does suggest these things are in fact a kinda shiny variant. Its all very weird.

                  • Link

The anime depicts them as individual characters, but we don't know if it's even canon to the games.
