In the original kill-it-with-fire series, Curin was Rex's best friend and the comic relief. In this reboot, his best friend niche is filled by Bill Blue, but he still is the comic relief (at least as an adult).

Curin and Rex first meet due to a rather petty disagreement over roll call, which ends up sending Curin to the hospital. He returns the next day under the influence of a demon, is soundly beaten again, and consrquently is sent to Purgatory while the demon takes control. The demon is eventually defeated and Curin is restored to his former self by the "Baron's Bolero," used as a lullaby for him when he was young.

Rex, partially angered at Curin's foolishness along with his general sour disposition, threatens to kill Curin should he ever cross him again. After that, Curin and crew mostly avoid Rex until freshman year at high school, where they end up on the JV basketball team. Rex doesn't make good on his promise, but also clearly dislikes Curin's company. This attitude carries to graduation.

In the adult time period, Rex, an engineer, runs into Curin's mother at the government library, where she tells him of Curin's PTSD after having seen his best friend blown to bits by a mine. Far more compassionate and forgiving than he was as a child, Rex helps Curin overcome his PTSD, though not without some resistence ("I thought you hated me? Why show your face now and pretend we were buddy-buddy after that threat you made?"). The two become friends.

Curin and Bill Blue have had a hatred of each other since an incident in the hospital nursery, and their antagonistic relationship worsens as time goes on, often catching Rex in the middle.

Compared to Rex, Curin is FAR more muscular, but is shorter and, like all dragons aside from a few, is much weaker in combat with dark forces.
