Inverness coat, in the style of Basil Rathbone's 1939 Hound of the Baskervilles

DonQuixote

A brown plaid Inverness coat in the style of Basil Rathbone's from his 1939 performance as Sherlock Holmes in Hound of the Baskervilles. Also featured is the previously pictured Deerstalker in black & white houndstooth.

Cotton exterior and lining. ...and having made this, I can now understand why they list around $225-300+ on Etsy.

Excellent! The Deerstalker is perfect. I'm so impressed by people who can sew. How... how do you all do it? Too cool.

Hey there! Sorry for being so late in responding. I really need to get around to updating my gallery here.

My suggestion to folks as to sewing -- particularly for those who haven't done much before -- is to start with a pattern rather than trying to create your own. It's easier to modify a design than to create one from scratch.

For this, I wound up up starting with an out-of-print Simplicity design (out-of-print doesn't mean you can't get it from their website tho) for a "Sherlock Holmes" outfit.

It wasn't exactly what I was looking for -- I think I only wound up using the back piece from it (sides and pockets were wrong, cape wasn't right dimensions, no flap of cloth to cover the buttons, wrong collar) -- but it was enough to give me an idea of what I was looking to do with the design. :)

The deerstalker is actually a fairly simple design -- six identical pieces (some folks use eight), sort of curved triangle shapes, to make the main body. Brims are just crescent moon shapes and earflaps are rectangles with half-circles on the end. That's the way I do patterns anyway -- try to break them down into simpler shapes to work from :)

Also, I have deerstalkers available for sale on etsy as TheClockworkCoyote :) The exterior's a wool-blend, interior's a grey polyester lining material, grosgrain ribbon for the ties
