Things come to a head between Coal and Milo. After sulking about being ignored by Milo and overshadowed by Chuck, Coal tries to make it clear that he has needs too... needs Milo has been ignoring out of fear and nervousness.

A bit of a gap between, yeah, depending on the number of favorites there's usually about 6-ish pages between them.
I try to give a bit of a summary in the comments - between the last page and this one Milo found Coal sulking by the river and wordlessly Milo tried to show some comfort by rubbing Coal's shoulders like he did earlier in the story... but Coal came to his senses, burned too many times by Milo starting something and then making an excuse to leave - hence the line about placating him like a pet lizard (in this world there are feral lizards, like iguanas, that are kept as pets, like how we'd keep pet dogs)

How fast the story changes! Just looking at the freebee panels sometimes it's hard to imagine how so many fit between two that we see and then this happens and the leap is to much to fathom - bit like life I guess
