Two ilesska

About this work: This was the third piece following my hiatus, and was made the morning after the situation had been rectified. It relates to feelings of being torn and guilt over not being able to help a friend who had not been so lucky with things, and feelings of frustration at not being able to help him.

About the Ilesska: The Ilesska are a vaguely raptor/shiba species from a dream of mine. I later built a world around their appearance in that dream.

See https://www.weasyl.com/submission/557453/hopelessness for an introduction to the ilesska!

The Ilesska are a sociable species, though often shy and easily frightened by non-Ilesska. Due to their artificial origin, they had been designed without any advanced survival instincts however. They were built to be easily taken advantage of. By creating an extremely social species whom were loath to be separated each other, something as simple as a day of solitary work away from their companions would often be a sufficient threat to keep them in line. Other simple methods of control and punishment often involved taking advantage of their highly sensitive ears and eyes, attacking them with bright lights or ultrasonic speakers. Flash-bangs were found to be tremendously effective, though Ilesska too close could be rendered deaf very easily.

By temporary sepparating Ilesska work units and reassigning them in groups, they would always manage to stay with some friends, but not all, making escape much more difficult. Very few Ilesska have managed to escape with all of their friends in tow short of rescue operations mounted by the Rebellion where they eliminated their captors and could free the slaves at will.

FA Entry: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/13114699/

Disclaimer: Not all my art will have a corresponding entry on FA due to technical limitations in how I wish to present the works.

For all intents and purposes, Weasyl is my primary art site now. If you can, it is preferable to leave your watches/favorites/etc. here, as you will miss out on non-FA posts (which will generally be larger and oriented towards providing information on characters & species).

This scene reminds me a lot of Fullmetal Alchemist, where Ed finally breaches the other side but can't bring Al back just yet, swearing he'll come back to get him. Also, with all of your work, from the thumbnails I feel like I'm seeing otters, probably because of the tapered tails. This species is really neat, and I'm not a particular fan of original species overall.

Hehe, thanks - and yeah, I think I do get the resemblance in the thumbnails. I suppose thats rather high praise that you find them that neat ^.^ -- what sorts of detractions have you encountered with other original species?

(ignore the hidden comment below - I just replied wrong >.<)

It's okay, I'm used to seeing the ghosts of hidden replies all around the site thanks to the mod stuff. x3 Yeah I was really excited to see otters from the thumbnails, but then I saw these Ilesskas and thought they were pretty neat. I have a similar kind of furred dragon character, so that's why I'm particularly partial to these guys.

It's, well.. some people kind of try too hard, if that makes sense. They try too hard to make their species super special and unique visually, not thinking things through biologically or having any sort of cohesion/backstory, but then pretend like they're the best thing since sliced bread.

Yeah, I think I get what you mean - Like when someone goes all out, visually speaking, but provides no reasoning as to why they are that way or whom they are?

I suppose another way could be that - especially in the case of hybrids - someone might try to assemble them like legos, potentially leading to a visually cluttered look rather than something more cohesive.

Basically. I'm not saying a species has to follow any particular rules of our universe, but they should make sense within their own world. I kind of see it as a cash grab for a lot of people, the way they make adoptables of their "closed species" and then overcharge others while putting restrictions on them. It just seems a bit silly to me, but as long as it isn't against our rules, it's simply my opinion.

That's a good analogy, yeah. Yours is particularly cohesive for sure.

            • Link

Ah, if I'm understanding right, they're basically species that they try to retain a copyright over so that only they can provide the adoptables - in effect making them proprietary? I suppose I see the financial motivation in doing it, but I agree, at least to me its rather silly. [Gotta run to get a vaccine, I'll reply more later]

Somewhat, yeah. I've seen it since the day I entered the fandom, literally. Someone combined two existing species and then claimed ownership over it, which was laughable at best. There's an interesting thread on the copyright issues over a closed species, over in the Art subforum. I don't think they're really financially viable at this level, it's more just to try and feel special and stand out. Not a bad thing inherently, just haven't had great experiences with it. I'll stop going on about it and spamming your submission. :P

Ah, no its fine! The activity probably helps anyways ^.^

Having a closed species isn't really something I'd want to do.

Personally, I'm flattered when someone decides to make characters from species I've come up with - that's something I'd like to encourage people to do with the species I make - its part of why I put them out there. I mean, there certainly is a limit - I wouldn't want a company making a game that features them as a species without my permission, but heck, if someone wanted to have a couple of their Vaalsark or Ilesska OCs for example in a little indie game, they wouldn't have to ask (But I'd like to know, out of curiosity, and maybe give them some signal boosting!).

I pretty much draw the line of asking permission at 'are you portraying characters, or are you portraying the species?' - portraying characters is absolutely fine, fantastic really. Portraying a species as a whole though, their culture, their history - thats the sort of stuff I'd want a hand in, to make sure its done right. Perhaps a bit of the royalties too, for a commercial project.

Well alright then, I just want to be respectful of your submission space. ^^; Your take is fair on it, I'm perfectly cool with that. I won't point out any particular examples of my own because that'd be a little too close to calling-out someone, but you've got the right attitude about it for sure. It's how I treat my own original music; if someone wants to use it, awesome! Just no monetary gains, that's all I'd ask. I create for myself, but if someone else likes it -that- much, I'm just flattered and happy to share.

Yeah, no worries - I'm pretty lax about the comment space

I'll probably have a CC license or something labeled on the species pages once I'm able to get to doing them, then add some more info to specify the exceptions. I like the idea of openness because its pretty much free publicity, and theres no real point to keeping it closed, since like you said, it seems like a lot of effort to go to just for a handful of character sales at best - not really financially viable. Possibly something coloring my views though is that, like you, I do this stuff for my own enjoyment, and its always fun to see others appreciate your work too.
